About Petbelts Dog Seat Belts

Petbelts dog seat belts ensure the safety of you & your dog when travelling in the car. All dog car harnesses are made from quality materials to keep your pet comfortable while travelling & undergo rigorous testing to keep your dog safe in the event of an accident.

In Australia our pets are like family and we often take them in the car with us. Wearing a seatbelt is the best way to protect ourselves from injury, or worse, in the case of an accident. However, many people don’t take the same precautions to keep their dog safe whilst travelling.

This results in over 5,000 pets being injured or killed in accidents on Australian roads each year. Leg and spine injuries are the most common, leading to long-term suffering for many of the survivors. Not only do these types of injuries cause ongoing suffering, but they are also some of the most expensive to effectively treat.

Restraining your pet in the first place is far less costly and could save both their life and yours. Rules introduced by the Australian Government in 2013 prohibit pets in the driver’s area of a vehicle including on a drivers lap. Traffic fines and demerit points are given to anyone caught not following these rules. In extreme cases, jail time may apply under the prevention of cruelty to animals act if your pet is injured or hurts somebody else during a collision.

A worrying number of people do not own a dog seatbelt or dog car harness to keep their pet out of the driver’s area of the car and safe in the event of a crash. There are also no official standards for the quality of dog car seat belts. Because of this, the standard of dog car harnesses varies from elasticised dog seatbelts made from durable materials and rigorously tested. To cheap, basic straps which could cause more harm than good in a life threatening crash. Particularly if secured to a dogs collar, rather than a full body harness.

Plastic buckles were the most common weak link in dog car restraints tested by NRMA engineers. They typically snapped during testing when pulled on abruptly, as in a car crash. Whilst these cheap pet seatbelts may restrain your pet during travel, they do little to prevent injury in the event of an accident on the road. To combat this, all Petbelts Dog Seatbelts are constructed using stainless steel buckles.
